The Waste Summit MC

Waste Expo Australia is proud to announce that Sally Williams will be the official MC of Waste Summit in 2018. Australia’s most recognised face of consumer product endorsement is making the bold decision to only support brands and services with a commitment to improved sustainability.

For more than 25 years Sally Williams has been appearing in Australian living rooms, providing insight into product benefits under the Brand Power banner. The trusted voice has promoted everything from muesli bars to washing detergent, and her engagement and considered approach to product reviews has been the secret to over a quarter of a century of commercial success for both the series and the brands it promotes.

However, when her contract was up for renegotiation at the end of 2017, Sally used the opportunity to make a significant step change.  She made the decision to not exclusively sign with Brand Power so that she could chose the products she would present on TV.

Williams will still take on project work with the likes of Brand Power for products that are making a positive environmental shift or already practicing in a sustainable fashion, but expects to work more directly with advertising agencies and marketers in the future.

“I know if I can give people information around sustainable practices it will categorically change their purchase decisions. There is a huge appetite out there for more transparency – and not just for eco brands – but also the big brands. Because they are not all created equal. And the ones that are making positive changes are looking for a vehicle in which to share that. I want to be the voice for them.

“From today most of the major states of Australia will have done away with single use plastic bags in supermarkets. Change is coming – the conversation around sustainability is only going to get bigger.”

As the daughter of a keen fisherman, Williams has been bound to the sea and our environment from a very early age. “Since last year I have been hosting a sustainable living segment with Denis Walter on 3AW.  I’m increasingly keen to use my profile to drive positive results based on more than just commercial success.”

While she has always considered herself a ‘conscious consumer’ the tipping point came for Sally a few years back when she was on a surfing safari in Sumatra with her family.

“Here we were boating around the Mentawai Islands enjoying a break. We came onto a small island for a walk I was devastated to see a mountain of rubbish filling an entire beach. There was literally no sand to walk on, only rubbish! The locals informed me tidal patterns brought this immense amount of waste into the region and that they had nowhere to put it. Saying it is one thing… but seeing it is quite another.

“That image stays with me and I know, after all the time I’ve spent promoting all manner of consumer goods, it’s time to play my part in driving more sustainable practices.”
